A Platinum Hit -
Platine Cookies top the Charts
Pastry Chef Jamie Cantor loves cookies. In May 2002, the Culinary Institute and
French Laundry veteran opened Platine Cookies in Venice Beach, California,
where she is quite at home with her new line of cookies, her new husband, and
her well-worn running shoes. (In addition to cookie eating and creating, Cantor is
also an avid runner.) Living up to its French name, which translates to platinum,
the cookie feature only the best and freshest ingredients. Cantor's "children," as
she likes to refer to her creations, include classics like Chocolate Chip and
Snickerdoodles, though her personal favorite is a signature cookie filled with
rolled oats, zante currants, granola, chocolate chips and walnuts.
Platine will not disappoint the chocolate-lover. Aside from cocoa-inspired spins
on classics like the Chocolate Gingersnap, Cantor features the Chocolate
Galore, a cookie combining four types of gourmet chocolate with California
walnuts. Her brownies, made with extra-brut cocoa powder, M. Cluizel and
Ghirardelli chocolates, are every bit as dense and chocolaty as the ones your
grandmothers made.
Happy that Platine is evolving "so nicely on its own," Cantor says she has no
definitive plans for the future of her company. As of now, Platine also provides
personal chef services, small dinner parties and cooking classes. Cantor's
cookies can be experienced all over the country, but be sure to order ahead
of time because Platine bakes every cookie to order and takes five days to ship.
Each dense, chewy, tangy, or chocolaty bite will affirm that the wait was well
worthwhile. (1-877-866-0696; www.platinecookies.com) - Heather Goodman
